Dominga contributes to the water supply of La Higuera residents
One of Dominga’s long-standing commitments to La Higuera and the region has been the efficient management of water resources, given the severe drought affecting the area. From the outset, the company announced that it would not use water from local basins but would rely exclusively on seawater, which it would also share with the communities.
During its pre-investment and pre-construction stages, Dominga decided to incorporate the strategic framework of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including Goal 6, which refers to “Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all.”
In line with this commitment, in 2022 Dominga and the La Higuera Community Association agreed that one of the first initiatives under the Framework Agreement for Human, Productive, and Environmental Development would be to provide resources to the Rural Drinking Water systems (APRs) to strengthen their operations and administrative management.
Currently, the La Higuera APR faces serious issues with its existing pump, severely affecting 570 families who no longer have continuous water service. “We only have water from 7 a.m. to noon. The rest of the day we manage with buckets. It’s a very uncomfortable situation for all of us,” said Saida Barraza, an APR user.
In response, Dominga decided to collaborate by providing a new pump, which will be installed directly in the El Trapiche ravine. This equipment will allow around 2,000 residents to have access to water throughout the entire day.
Residents expressed their appreciation for this joint effort between the community and the company, which will restore continuous access to such an essential resource, a particularly meaningful development in the days leading up to Chile’s Independence celebrations.
“We are very grateful for Dominga’s support and for the efforts of our community leaders. We hope that within three days the new pump will be installed so that all our neighbors can finally have this basic service again,” said Verónica Barriga, a member of the APR board.
